This talk explores with the participants the possibilities of integrating art and science in the elementary school. Both art and science require the presence of the observer who sees and experiences. Are the two areas of human inquiry – art and science really so distinct, how can we help children explore and learn holistically. How can the affective be brought into the foreground while the cognitive remains alert? What is the role of imagination in science? Are scientists creative? Are artists scientific? These are some of the questions that we shall explore through an interactive session.

Speaker: Indira Vijaysimha
Ph.D., B.Ed., M.Sc.(hons)
Indira began her early career as a High school science teacher and then joined the Centre for Environment Education (CEE) as a teacher educator. Her work as a teacher and later as a teacher educator with CEE, provoked a deep questioning about the processes of education and led Indira to found the Poorna Trust. This non-profit trust manages Poorna Learning Centre in Bangalore – an ‘alternative’ school which emerged out of Indira’s experiences from home-schooling her own children and from her reflections as a teacher and teacher educator. Over the last decade, Indira has taught and researched at Azim Premji University. Until retirement she was actively engaged with teaching a number of courses. She also continued her research in the areas of teacher education, sustainability education and science education.
